The Board of Certification Requirements for Certified Athletic Trainers:
The BOC CEU Requirements state that “Athletic Trainers (ATs) must complete a predetermined number of continuing education units (CEUs) during the certification maintenance period.” The current period ends December 31, 2017.
How many CEUs are required per certification maintenance period?
- ATs certified before 2016 must complete 50 CEUs before December 31, 2017, which must include at least 10 Evidence Based Practice (EBP) CEUs.
- ATs certified in 2016 must complete 25 CEUs before December 31, 2017, which must include at least 5 Evidence Based Practice (EBP) CEUs.
What are categories A, B, C, and D programs?
Category A
Category A programs are BOC-approved provider programs. AthleticTraining.com is a BOC-approved provider. Our approved provider number is P3633.
- Maximum: 40 CEUs is the maximum number you can use toward the 50 CEUs due; 20 CEUs is the maximum number you can use toward the 25 CEUs due.
- Minimum: There is no minimum number of CEUs required for category A.
Category B
Category B programs include professional and scholarly activities such as authoring a published textbook, participating on a research team or speaking at a conference/seminar.
- Maximum: 33 CEUs is the maximum number you can use toward the 50 CEUs due; 17 CEUs is the maximum number you can use toward the 25 CEUs due.
- Minimum: There is no minimum number of CEUs required for category B.
Category C
Category C programs include post-certification college/university coursework.
- Maximum: 40 CEUs is the maximum number you can use toward the 50 CEUs due; 20 CEUs is the maximum number you can use toward the 25 CEUs due.
- Minimum: There is no minimum number of CEUs required for category B.
Category D
Category D programs include non-BOC approved programs. The content of the program must fall within the domains identified in the Role Delineation Study/Practice Analysis, Sixth Edition.
- Maximum: 28 CEUs is the maximum number you can use toward the 50 CEUs due; 14 CEUs is the maximum number you can use toward the 25 CEUs due.
- Minimum: There is no minimum number of CEUs required for category B.

What are the minimum EBP requirements?
